The Radio France Judy Garland Tribute Takes Shape

Peggy Bouveret

The tribute to Judy Garland by Radio France on Sunday, June 10, 2012, celebrating what would have been her 90th birthday, is now taking shape. Called Bon anniversaire Miss Judy! – Judy Garland à 90 ans [Happy Birthday Miss Judy! – Judy Garland at 90], the homage, which will be directed by Jean Lacornerie, will include singers Tina May, Peggy Bouveret, Amélie Munier, and Laurent Naouri, and Jeff Cohen on the piano. The tribute, which will take place at 6 P.M. at the theatre Centquatre in the 19th arrondissement in Paris, will be emceed by Laurent Valière, who is the producer and host of the program 42e rue [42nd Street], heard on France Musique on Sunday mornings at 11. The concert, which will include songs from A Star Is Born and other Garland favorites, will also mark the first performance of the song “I’m Off the Downbeat,” which was written for A Star Is Born by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin, but never recorded by Garland.

The Garland tribute is but one of several concerts that are part of a weekend, called Mélodies du bonheur [The Sound of Songs], devoted to classical American popular music. Other concerts to take place over the June 9-June 10 weekend include an Isabelle Georges songfest devoted to musical comedy, a concert by the musicians of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France called Berlin-Paris-Broadway, a Stephen Sondheim tribute, and a young soloists event.  For more information, go to: http://www.104.fr/programmation/actualite/calendrier.html?mois=06&annee=2012 , or http://sites.radiofrance.fr/chaines/formations/concerts/104/index.php?IDA=3489 .
