In celebration of the centennial of Judy Garland’s birth on June 10, 2022, Hit Parade Records presents JUDY AT 100 – 26 CLASSICS IN STEREO which features the best of Garland’s film, TV, and studio performances. 26 of her original classic recordings all in thrilling stereo high-fidelity, highlighted by the premiere release of 22 tracks in state-of-the-art stereo. This audiophile quality CD will be available on June 3, 2022.
Thanks to modern equalization (EQ) techniques, these classic recordings now benefit from 21st-century technology, allowing listeners to more fully appreciate these classics in stereo for the first time. Listeners will hear subtle details they have never heard before, having previously been buried in the original mono mixes. Garland never sounded better!
During her lifetime, Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969) was known as “The World’s Greatest Entertainer,” a title that has stood the test of time a half-century after her untimely death. In a career that spanned five decades, Garland mastered every medium from Vaudeville to television and introduced classic songs from the Great American Songbook. In this centennial year more than fifty years after her untimely death, Judy Garland remains an icon of show business history.
All of the great Garland hits are here, “Over the Rainbow” (2 versions), “The Trolley Song,” “Get Happy,” “I Don’t Care,” “The Man That Got Away,” “On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe,” “I’m Nobody’s Baby,” “Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart” and more. Also included are duets with Barbra Streisand and Gene Kelly, studio tracks, live recordings, and film performances.
Produced by Bill Buster and Scott Brogan, this 26 track compilation is accompanied by a twelve-page booklet that features photos accompanied by illuminating notes about each track by Brogan, who heads the website The Judy Room featuring The Judy Garland Online Discography, and the blog Judy Garland News & Events, which are the leading online sources of information concerning Garland. The sound was produced by Mark Mathews & Walt Weiskopf with additional restoration by John Haley. Only a CD is available at this time (no streaming).
Every original recording has gone through a three-step process. Step one is a lengthy process in which the various sonic elements are isolated. Since most instruments and vocals occupy fairly narrow, specific audio frequency ranges, it’s now possible to isolate vocals, drums, bass, and strings and extract these elements into separate tracks. Step two requires an experienced sound engineer to place those separated elements in a new stereo mix. Finally, step three is to equalize the stereo mix to give it a rich, pleasing sound you may have never heard in the old mono sources.

A shame the 9/10/45 Atchison wasn’t chosen, IMHO….
It’s a matter of personal preference as far as which version the fans like more. The version on this release (recorded on May 15, 1945) was chosen because it’s the longer, more elaborate version with a stronger vocal by Judy. Plus, it’s not as well-known to the general public. 🙂

I really love the song selection here, however I wasn’t convinced that the clip of the 1958 version of ‘Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart’ sounded very stereo at all as it didn’t seem to have as much reverb or echo as I’m used to.
I realise that she did a mono version of this album as well as a stereo one. Is this possibly a hi-fi version of her mono recording? This isn’t a compalint as Judy was as good as ever, and this is deffo one of her all time classics.
The version of “Zing!” used on this CD is the stereo version from 1958. I don’t know the specifics of what the audio engineers did, but the upgrade might have removed some of that echo and reverb.
I love all the samples, simply amazing, but I would like to ask about the Garland/Streisand duet, although beautifully restored in stereo I felt Judy’s voice sounded slightly muffled compared to Barbra’s crisp voice, has anyone else noticed or felt the same way as I. Frank.
I can’t speak for the audio engineers, but I do know that this track was one of the trickiest that they worked on for a long time. Judy’s voice is a much different, muted tone than Streisand’s, even in the original recording. So much so that here they had to lower Streisand’s volume a bit. As with the original, Judy’s voice gets louder as the song continues to the point that by the end she’s matching Streisand’s volume and power. When you hear the whole track you’ll know what I mean. 🙂

To avoid any confusion, this was the label’s early stereo work. The version featured in this new CD features a new, better stereo mix. The technology has advanced quite a bit – and very fast! 🙂
Another thought, days later: one I’d really like to hear remixed is the 1948 MGM version of “Johnny One Note”, which boasts one of the most complex, thrilling arrangements by the brilliant Conrad Salinger. Sadly, the Spanish flutes, horns, and Judy’s stunningly powerful vocal sound extremely muddled, even in the best of mono releases. Maybe on the next album.

I’m sorry about thinking “Over the rainbow” was from the new CD. Now, while I searching Youtube I came across a stereo copy of the 1955 Ford TV special. I never heard it sound so good. I hope it’s alright to post this information.

The two versions of “Over the Rainbow” on the new CD are the movie version and the 1955 Capitol LP version, not the Ford Star version. But it looks as though this was made with similar DES technology. However, many people simply run the audio through the program and don’t go back and give each track the human help they need to ensure it’s correct. It all in how the human side monitors the separation of the sound elements. In other words, there are hours and hours of work on just one song. So, beware of things like this that are sub-par. 🙂

I am very excited about this Judy at 100 CD in stereo. I tried to order on Amazon and it was sold out. I will order from another site. I finally purchased the Carnegie Hall new remastered from Avid and audio engineer Nick Dellow, and love it. And liner notes by the wonderful Lawrence Schulman.
