I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of my first book, “Judy Garland – The Voice of MGM,” which is available now for preorder from your favorite online retailers! [Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Walmart / Booksshop.org / Hudson Books]

"Judy Garland - The Voice of MGM"

“Judy Garland – The Voice of MGM” is the first comprehensive book about Judy’s MGM years.  It features tons of new, previously unpublished facts and details about Judy’s time at MGM, personally and professionally.  Peppered throughout are some rare, previously unpublished photos (and some fan favorites, too!).  It’s an in-depth look that is as celebratory as it is revelatory.

Additionally, “Judy Garland—The Voice of MGM” provides a detailed look at Judy’s pre-MGM career in vaudeville and its importance in shaping her into the great talent we know today.  Details about Judy’s radio performances, her recordings for Decca Records, and her personal appearance tours—especially her USO tours—provide more insights.

From Lyons Press:

More than 100 years after her birth, Judy Garland remains the gold standard by which all movie musical leading ladies are judged.  She is revered and celebrated by current stars, directors, songwriters, and others in the entertainment industry.  She also has a fan base that is as large as that of Marilyn Monroe or James Dean.  Her image, especially “Dorothy” in The Wizard of Oz (1939), is an instantly recognized icon.  Garland really was the voice of MGM during her tenure and after.  No documentary about any aspect of the history of the MGM Studios is complete without Garland’s voice on the soundtrack.  When people think of MGM Musicals, they think of Garland along with Gene Kelly, and Fred Astaire.  She’s the only female in that exalted “top three.”

There have been many books about Garland’s fabled and troubled life, but none devoted solely to the study (and celebration) of her years at MGM. She entered the studio as a 13-year-old contract player in 1935.  She left the studio in 1950 carrying the title “Metro’s Greatest Asset.”  Judy Garland: The Voice of MGM will focus on Garland’s films, but it will also delve into her other professional achievements, such as her extensive appearances on radio programs, her long association with Decca Records, and her personal appearances, highlighted by her USO Bond Tours in the early 1940s.

This will be the definitive book about Garland’s legendary career at MGM, pulling back the curtain to reveal the truths about that career while also presenting previously unknown details and facts that are sure to delight her fans as well as fans of classic film.

  1. Will this book include extensive information on Roger Eden’s who is so often left out? Good job.

    1. I go into a synopsis of his history before MGM and how he ended up there and of course, his association with Judy. I think a book about him would be great!

  2. This is the book I’ve been waiting for. From the description, and from what I know of Scott Brogan from this site, I am absolutely salivating in anticipation of its release.

My all-time favorite reading experience about Miss Garland was Gerold Frank’s JUDY, which I’ve read many times and which made me feel I was getting a real inside look into the workings of the entertainment world, particularly the film studio MGM. I was in Heaven reading about those years of Judy’s life, and it made me appreciate what a workhorse she was and how inevitable and understandable it was that she’d have the problems she did.

Somehow I just know that this book is going to exceed that reading experience. I am just absolutely positively CERTAIN. So I am ordering from Amazon right away.

And I cannot fail to mention that the cover design of this book is FREAKIN GORGEOUS. If I could have a poster of it I would hang it smack dab in the middle of my living room!

To sum up: Cant wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t WAIT!!!!!!!!

    1. Thank you! That’s quite the write-up. Everything you said is everything I hope this book is to everyone, especially the fans. There is a lot of new details about Judy’s MGM years, and her pre-MGM vaudeville years. Like you, it’s my favorite era of her life (not that the others aren’t amazing, too). My hope is people come away from the book having learned new things and with an appreciation of her, her talents – and the fact that she was very human.

And Frank’s book is one of my faves, too! 🙂

  3. What a lovely surprise! So happy for you and I’m sure it will be a raging success. Pre-order made, and I have so much joyful anticipation for its release and digging into it!

    1. also, i love the cover photo you chose–is that her dress from “who?” in till the clouds roll by?

  4. Sigh 😔 Is it June yet? I must have this book already! I’m so happy you’ve written this book Scott. I know it’s going to be great. 👍

  5. An audible with Scott reading from it and playing recordings would make a great companion piece.

  6. I wish I could attend the event! I’d love to meet you in person and thank you for all that you have contributed to the Judy Garland legacy, as well as have my copy of the book signed.
