M-G-M marked its 50th anniversary with this outstanding collection of musical performances from the studio’s reign as the king of the genre during Hollywood’s golden era. Drawing from more than 100 feature films, writer/producer/director Jack Haley Jr.’s compilation took the box office by storm, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1974, and brought excerpts from timeless gems from “An American in Paris” to “Ziegfeld Follies to audiences new and old in just 135 magical minutes. For this special occasion, Haley called upon great stars to ‘host’ this brilliantly conceived cinematic event: Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor. This celebration of the M-G-M musical has been painstakingly remastered from the best existing elements to yield a new presentation that finally does justice to Haley’s dazzling cinematic achievement, which cemented the importance of the M-G-M musical’s unique place in film history.

  1. Can’t wait. What a great collection of the MGM treasures. The Judy Garland sections are wonderful! 👏 👏👏 👏 ✌️

  2. Just hope every shot is in its correct aspect ratio. The first Blu Ray of TE, released years ago, was an ungodly mess! The DVD was actually superior. But with today’s scans, this should look fabulous!

  3. I don’t understand what the difference is between this and what has already been released. I mean really. Are you going to really be able to see and hear that much of a difference to purchase it again. It’s just another way to keep rehashing and continue to make more money. The Wizard of Oz has been new and improved so many times over the years that my brother once said if they get it any better they’re going to be right there in your living room. 😎😊

    1. This is the first time it’s actually being remastered in true HD, for one. The previous Blu-rays were just transfers of the existing prints (digital files) used for the standard DVDs. And they look horrible, especially the black and white footage which has way too much film grain.

As their press release states, this is being not only remastered but “reconstructed” using the newly remastered elements of the various clips. The previous clips were what was available in the early 1970s, which was a mixed bag of quality, at best. This is definitely going to look and sound so much better, and be the great experience it was when it was first shown in theatres in 1974.

    2. They just keep re-releasing them with either a better picture or an extra that has never been released before. So, we keep buying the same movies over and over again. I have almost every Judy Garland film on VHS and DVD. Then I bought them again in Blu-ray (the ones that have been released anyway). But re-buying blu-rays of films I already have on blu-ray. Not sure about that.

      1. I can understand that sentiment, to a point. As I noted, this is the first time it’s actually being remastered in true HD, for one. The previous Blu-rays were just transfers of the existing prints (digital files) used for the standard DVDs. And they look horrible, especially the black and white footage which has way too much film grain.

    3. I for one welcome this upgraded Blu-ray release. The previous Blu-ray’s black and white clips were excessively grainy. Maybe you were happy with it, but I certainly was not.

      1. I agree that many of the black and white clips on the previous release are grainy. What’s to deter Warner from releasing a lower quality product when they know that can re-release the same film 4 or 5 years later and make twice as much money because we keep re-buying it. Bad for us, but good for Warner’s bottom line.

        1. I wouldn’t worry about that scenario. It hasn’t happened yet because they know better. All of the upgraded new-to-blu-ray releases thus far haven’t been a lower quality product, and have been well worth the upgrade. This is well worth it, too.
